Let's begin by leaving here a piece of trash as development, practice, motivation. Number one in (hopefully) a daily/weekly blog post that gets my thoughts to the page and my nose to the grindstone.
I sit in my room, stereo on, record spinning, listening to music while I work on my to-do list. A combination of small tasks and works in progress that require a touch a day. A touch a day, the practice I'd like to get into so I can feel good about myself. It could help my career out in the long run, but it may just make it easier for me to fall asleep at night knowing I put in the work I've been for so long stressing over.
De La Soul bounces from wall to wall and permeates my body with its warmth. Today I learned of the passing of one of De La's founding members David Jolicoeur, aka Trugoy the Dove. With a somber feeling whenever any artist passes away, especially too young, I take to their craft. I consume their art and ponder the individual, pay homage to the late greats. I may not be able to point out Trugoy's verses from the other member's, but that doesn't play down the enjoyment and appreciation of the art he and the rest of De La created. Rest in peace to a founding member and integral factor to some of my favorite Hip Hop tracks. I will always remember the first times I heard these influential songs, beats, and samples.
- Me, Myself, and I - NBA Street V3 - A classic video game imprinted in my brain sound tracked by what felt like one song. Could have just been me, myself, and I feeling that way, but all jokes aside... it stood out the most.
- Buddy (Remix) - A skate video I so desperately wish to find again - My first impression of Buddy and what an introduction it was. I thank so many skate videos for turning me onto great music. This may be the top tier on my list. A fantastic edit choice and may I add - one hell of a music video.
- Plug Tunin' - Senior year of college - History of Hip Hop was one of my favorite classes I took in my four years at UNH. With a paper assigned and 3 Feet High and Rising as the subject, my music catalog was expanded and my love of hip hop broadened. A true classic - "The most famous classic in all the world of music."
- Supa Emcees - UNH library (bottom floor) - Being a commuter I never had many places to go during my breaks between classes. I took to the library, equipped with my computer and headphones, and listened to Stakes Is High on YouTube while illegally recording each track to add to my ITunes. Whats a college kid to do?
- Pain - My 2003 Ford Ranger - Incidentally, the year I got super into De La, wrote a paper on their debut album, and spend hours appreciating what I missed out on the first time around, the group announced their newest album in 14 years. The first single I heard, Pain, brought me a lot of joy. Also, quite possibly, the pain of realizing what I'd let go unnoticed every year of my existence. Me - EST -1993.
Might I add - De La Soul is not trash. First and foremost.
I'm happy to begin my process with an integral reason for starting this blog. Music has impacted and shaped my life more than anything else that has interested me. It intrigues me, stumps me, and makes me feel tingly - amongst other sensations. Here it is, number one. I'm looking forward to other iterations of this post. Stay tuned to the frequency. Right now its bumpin'.
Remember to tread water everyone,
Pat
